Bourhan Tayara (1935-2018)
Bourhan Tayara was born in Homs in 1935 and died in 2018. In 1958, he attended Ain Shams University in Egypt to study architecture, and later went on to receive a master’s degree from the University of Texas in America in 1963, and a doctorate in architecture from the Catholic University of America in 1967. Upon his return to Syria, he taught at the Department of Architecture at Aleppo University and then at Damascus University, and opened his own firm “Arab Planners and Architects” (APACHI) in 1968. He briefly returned to Texas in 1985 to practice architecture there. Later on, he left Texas for teaching positions in the Arab Gulf, stating the lack of opportunities in architectural work in Texas as a reason. He taught first at King Saud University in Saudi Arabia and then at the Ajman University of Science and Technology in the United Arab Emirates.01 He later joined the Arab International University in Syria as a consultant in the planning and design of the campus, and continued to teach at Damascus University and private universities until his passing away.
